Alberta Veterinary Care is a new neighborhood veterinary hospital in Portland's beautiful Alberta Arts district. Our mission is to partner with you to provide your pet exceptional care in a friendly, safe, and comfortable environment. We provide a range of services including puppy and kitten health checks, dentistry, general surgery, focused senior care, advanced diagnostic care including ultrasound examination, and management of skin conditions. We now utilize laser surgery (Co2 laser) whenever possible. Laser surgery has many advantages over traditional surgery for your pet. A laser is a device that produces an extremely powerful and concentrated beam of light. We had a great experience visiting Dr. Cates with our Newfoundland "Mars." The office staff were very knowledgeable and deft; making the experience very positive for everyone. Dr. Cates is a sincere professional and a wonderful communicator too! We have had allergy problems with Mars for years, and I feel he is now in the right hands.
Friendly, experienced, competitively priced, clean, honest, and excellent diagnosticians. My dog loves them and my cat just had a dental procedure there and was THE happiest cat post surgery I've ever seen. Dr. Corbet is Da bomb! I almost don't want others to know because this place is a rare gem. The other veterinarians I've been to got too big, sold their practice and started to really not be awesome. Love everyone at Alberta Veterinary Care!
Dr. Cates and his team were wonderful when I got my new puppy. Very informative for someone who has never taken cared of an animal, much less a puppy. They were able to give me good estimates of cost and a timeline as to watch to expect for the following 6 months. They were very receptive to questions when i called and had a lot of references for me to check out. Highly recommended, they are super friendly
Dr. Corbet is giving us the support we need to care for our just adopted five-year old Chiwawa; our new family member has had a trying life, and we hope to make her remaining years very happy. We are lucky to have Dr. Corbet in our corner, and to have this sweet little "WA-WA" in our home.
We started going here after taking our dog to four other vets over the course of a few years with no solution to all of his health problems. The vets we saw either blamed us for not taking care of him or put him on so many meds I could barely keep track of them all. Dr. Cates figured out what was wrong on his first visit and he's never had his symptoms come back since the first visit two years ago. They're also always kind and have done a great job with all our other pets as well!
Just switched veterinarians based on recommendation from friends. I couldn't be happier. Dr Cates is phenomenal! Very thorough, professional, empathetic and explains everything really well. Dog ended up being very ill and needed emergency surgery and Dr Cates got the ball rolling. Dog is home now recovering. To top it off, the facility is beautiful, clean and in a convenient location with excellent ancillary staff!

Dr. Cates and his team are simply remarkable. I came to them with my beloved 17 year old kitty after recently moving to Portland and they graciously accepted him as a patient despite his already existing kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and arthritis. In the past six months, I had to visit them more often than I'd have liked, but there was never a time when I didn't feel as though my cat wasn't the most important animal in the world to Dr. Cates.
We have been taking our dog and two cats to Alberta Veterinary Care since they opened. The whole staff is very friendly and professional! Everything has been easy from scheduling appointments (even those pesky urgent ones) to emails with invoices and summaries from their visits. Dr. Cates is thorough, caring, and extremely responsive when we have had questions or concerns about how to best care for our aging pets.
Without a doubt the best vet I've seen in Portland. Dr. Corbet and her staff are all-stars. They treat my cat - love of my life, but a real monster at the vet - with affection and respect, even when she's being fractious and awful to them. I always feel respected and like I'm getting through, thoughtful, scientific healthcare. The clinic itself is clean, modern, and charming. I'd refer any of my friends' cats and dogs to this practice.
